Mormon Olympians

This site focuses on the participation of Mormons (or members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) in the Olympics, from Athens to Salt Lake City and beyond.

Mormonism is a religion that values betterment of self and society. It celebrates various kinds of achievement, including athletic. In fact, one of the Articles of Faith (or fundamental principles) of Mormonism states:

“If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things” (Joseph Smith).

The Olympic Games certainly foster praiseworthy achievements, and the gathering of diverse peoples from around the globe is heartwarmingly lovely. It comes as no surprise, then, that residents of Utah were so enthusiastic about hosting the Salt Lake Winter Olympics in 2002, volunteering in great numbers and doing their best to receive the world hospitably. Because of the extensive media coverage, many people around the world were suddenly exposed to the unfamiliar yet appealing faith and culture of the predominant Mormons.

The purpose of this site is to keep the Olympic flame lit in the minds of Mormons, and to kindle and fuel a flame of deeper understanding in the hearts of our friends of other faiths. You will find inspiring information here about current and past Olympics, and about Mormon athletes who played in the renowned Games.
